Four Slivkans went with Parag Gupta, a graduate student fellow, to Devon Street and ate at Viceroy of India. It's an Indian buffet and has wonderful food for its price. The butter chicken is always a good choice and they enjoyed the mango ice cream. Everyone talked about their background and what they were majoring in, and apparently Parag grew up with Lance Bass from the Backstreet Boys. Afterwards, they took a scenic tour through Wilmette and looked at the houses.

There is a reason why this event is so popular every year. Professor Herbst is one of the most intriguing faculty members here at Northwestern, not only heading up the Masters in Product Development program through McCormick currently, but also having been a part of the Executive MBA Program at Kellogg in the past. He also runs one of the most successful design firms here in Chicago. At dinner, the group of us, of course, spoke of our individual background, but also many other topics, such as our aspirations for the future, the history of Evanston, the current state of the world, and even the process of design and innovation. Professor Herbst not only cares about McCormick and design, but also students that he meets and can guide. His door will always be open for Slivkans that want to chat, need career advice, or need help with anything- like an Engineering Design and Communications Project.  He, most likely, will be hosting this event again. So be sure to go next quarter!

Last Monday, November 9, seven Slivkans met with Tim Higgins, the engaging campus minister at the Sheil Catholic Center, at Giordano's. We indulged in Eli's favorite, tomato and garlic, as well as a spinach pizza with green peppers and sausage. Yum!

Today (Sunday, November 15th), we - a group of 4 slivkans - went to the East Branch forest preserve in DuPage County to launch the rockets we had built. The launch went great, and all of the rockets worked, including Art's huge alien-housing satellite. If it wasn't for me though, there would be only 3 slivkans coming back from the trip. Ask me if you want to hear the full story.

President Schapiro at Slivka

One of the biggest firesides this quarter was that of President Schapiro. On a Monday evening (October 26th), he came to introduce himself to slivkans and to chat about student life. Particularly, President Schapiro asked us to tell him about our problems. And so it went - first "Sodexho," then "lack of diversity," then "difficult classes," and even "construction outside my class" - just about everyone complained about something, and President Schapiro promised to do his best to get some of these problems resolved. Moral of the story: President Schapiro is very accessible and claims to be on the side of the students. I don't know about you, but I'm pretty excited about that.
